How will retiring practitioners realize any value on retirement?

According to CPA Canada’s 2018 study, 55% of Canada’s CPAs in public practice are doing it alone –

…and if you study STATSCAN’s detailed financial reports for offices of public accountants, the wages and subcontract fees paid suggest that most of us have trouble finding skilled staff.

Maybe that’s because in Canada – like most western countries our population is aging.

In Canada only 34% of CPAs are under 40 – that is about what we would expect based demographic data for the population as a whole.

Surprisingly we have more than twice as many CPAs in Canada (5.48 per 1,000 population vs 2.07 in the US). While there are significantly more Canadian CPAs than Americans, the difference isn’t nearly as great when it comes to Canadian CPAs in public  practice.

Anecdotally we’re hearing that it is harder to attract millennials into public practice. Perhaps they just don’t buy the BS we tell them about WORK-LIFE BALANCE –

…so who’s going to buy you out when you want to retire, or scale back your hours?

How much is a Canadian accounting firm currently selling for?

“We hear a lot in the news about the mid-tier and large firm acquisitions and mergers. What about the sale and merger of small firms? Within the last six months, we at Clearline Consulting have assisted in the closing of six deals in B.C. Compensation ranged from $0.375 to $1.00 per dollar of billings.”

MAKE ARBITRAGE WORK FOR YOU…

Working as a public accountant and tax specialist (in Canada’s lucrative SR&ED tax incentives) I teamed up with a professional engineer and purchased a SR&ED practice. The vendor was beginning to realize that he had been targeted by the CRA, but he had good clients and we were able to make it work.

I reasoned that technology had made it easier to collaborate over large distances and set about taking advantage of “arbitrage” in accounting services –
By using CPAs from the Philippines I was able to reduce my time on more routine compliance work and focus instead on my SR&ED specialty
