SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

ABOUT CALIBR8.ME

At CALIBR8.ME our mission is to build better training that meets the needs of smaller, accounting practitioners and their main street, small business clients.

We believe that the accounting profession in Canada has lost its way and primarily serves the needs of the largest CPA firms, 10 of which accounted for 46% of the revenue of the more than 30,000 firms in the accounting industry (2019).

Shifting demographics have resulted in a significant increase in older accounting practitioners. According to a 2020 study by K2E CANADA INC, more than 56% of practitioners are at least 55 years of age and 22% are at least 65 years of age.

What’s more it is also becoming almost impossible to attract – or even train – the next generation of practitioner.

At SMALL BUSINESS ANALYSTS SOCIETY of CANADA we set about building online training materials to meet the needs of the smaller accounting practice, management accountants working with Canada’s small business sector, and of students themselves.

We believe that the accounting competencies required for Canada’s 3.8 million small businesses are fundamentally different from those imagined to be required to meet the needs of the twenty-five thousand or so medium and large-sized businesses.

Too often these imagined competencies are the result of wishful thinking and the ‘spin’ foisted on the rest of us by the marketing departments of our largest firms.

PRACTICAL STATISTICS

In University, we're often forced to take statistics courses. But managers aren't ever likely to become statisticians. We actually need the tools to find & critically evaluate statistical data that's readily available - often for free.

In this course we take a look at our accounting profession through a statistical lens, in an attempt to better understand who we are and what our members do.

It is the logical first step in strategic planning for ourselves – and for our clients. What services do we offer and does it vary by size of firm and market segment?

We also look at the accounting & services that small businesses actually use, as a first step in understanding “product, market, fit”….

FIT FOR PURPOSE

While there may or may not be a legal obligation under Canadian law, there is almost certainly an ethical obligation by business schools and the business professions (I’m thinking of accounting and the legal profession here) to provide value for money for what amounts to one of a person’s largest investments in their lifetime – their choice of career.
